The Fool

The Fool

The Fool is one of my favorite cards. It’s the first card (technically the Zero card) of the Tarot deck, and many people give it negative connotations. Nobody wants to be thought of as a “Fool” - which means I have to do some quick talking when it comes up in a reading – especially if it represents the person I’m reading to!
The image of the card has a young person with a bundle of possessions walking carelessly off a cliff, a happy dog nipping at their feet.
Many of life’s choices and adventures are like that – if you don’t watch where you are going, then there is every possibility of falling on your face. Yet it takes strength and courage to walk forward – no matter the obstacle in front of you. I’d rather trip and fall than stay still and have nothing happen. Because life is all about that adventure – either the learned lessons from falling, and tripping, or the possible wonderfulness at the bottom of that fall.
My 80’s Deck has the song “What I Am” from Edie Brickell. I love the innocence of the song, putting in mind of the carefree youth, and also the message -

” What I am is what I am.
Are you what you are - or what?”

I am who I am, and I that’s who I try and be. What about you?

And that is a good representation of what the card really means to me. Regardless of whether or not anyone understands your motivations nor your actions, you still go forward, believing in yourself and your path.
And that’s why I like the Fool card. It’s a great start to the deck, and opens up great horizons, while still showing you that you are you, with all the possibility of greatness and all the difficulty that living brings us all.
