8 of Cups

Hello! I’m Justine, creator of 4Tunes. In March of 2005, I had the epiphany that the songs I love can represent the Tarot cards I use. So I thought I’d start this off by mentioning the first song to undergo this revelation:

“I Ran (So Far Away)” by A Flock Of Seagulls - which became the 8 of Cups.

The card is represented by a man leaving behind eight cups to follow the moon. I’ve always read this as the abandonment of the past (for good or ill) to follow a new path. It takes courage to do this, to leave all everything known, comfortable and familiar, and go for the unknown. Many times people resist this action for fear of what will happen and/or other people’s reactions. The song “I Ran (So Far Away)” is about this struggle - to move toward something possible, something great, or to run away from it. The singer talks about the woman he meets - how she’s more than he could ever hope for:

“I walk along the avenue/I never thought I’d meet a girl like you/Meet a girl like you”

And he is afraid of all of the potential, of what the relationship could mean. So he runs - but eventually, he realizes that running won’t get him away. So even if you run from your problems, it’s not often the solution. And as we move away from things that hurt us, we find we often carry the burdens and pains with us, as well - so we don’t truly escape. We even get so confused with our emotions that we run away from the good things, too.

The thing to realize is that the running IS happening - whether or not it is smart,
or successful, is not relevent to this card itself. So - even if he can’t “get away”
the act of trying - and running - is there.

Now, even the band A Flock of Seagulls must be tired of this song - I assume that’s true for most one-hit-wonders (not casting aspersions on the band, it’s just what they’re best known for here in the States) - but they also can’t “run away” from this song, regardless of whether or not they want to. And I am pleased by that delicious irony.
